What will you learn?

As an MGEM student, you will spend 9 months studying full-time on UBC’s Vancouver campus, beginning with a 1-week welcome retreat. The program’s curriculum is a mix of theory and hands-on experience, including:

  • A 3-week intensive landscape ecology course on landscape and ecosystem modelling and core environmental management themes
  • Analytical and quantitative courses in GIS, remote sensing and image processing, spatial statistics, spatial data analysis and programming
  • A proof-of-concept project that demonstrates how quantitative spatial analysis could be used to solve an environmental issue
  • Project management course to develop critical skills for working with researchers, educators, and geospatial industry professionals

As an MGEM graduate, you will be equipped to:

  • Model landscapes and ecosystems for planning and assessment
  • Integrate landscape ecology concepts with geomatics-focused tools for environmental management
  • Collaborate with communities and people who are interested in using geospatial data to address environmental concerns
